Recently Lost Your Job? Medicare Advantage Has Got You Covered

A Plan that Meets All Your Needs

Medicare Advantage Plans are private insurance plans intended to be a holistic alternative to Medicare. These plans bundle Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, Prescription Coverage (Medicare Part D) and more. If you are currently enrolled in a Medicare Supplemental plan or a Medigap plan, you cannot sign up for Medicare Advantage without first dropping your plan. In order to enroll in a plan during special enrollment, you'll need proof of a qualifying life event (such as job loss). An expert can help.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)
While Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans are needed to cover both Medicare Parts A and B, they can sometimes be cheaper than and offer more coverage than traditional Medicare plans. This plan means that you can only pick physicians and hospitals within the HMO network—unless there is an emergency.
Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)
In a Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plan, you're able to visit doctors, hospitals and specialists within the PPO network. Healthcare providers outside of your network are also available, but for an additional cost.
Private Fee for Service (PFFS)
The Private Fee For Service (PFFS) plan gives you the freedom to use any doctor or specialists as long as they agree to the terms, fees and conditions of your plan. In these instances, the PFFS plan chooses how much it will pay for the services rendered. You, however, will have the option to spend what you'd like on the PFFS plans—allowing you to save.
Medical Savings Account (MSA)
A Medical Savings Account bundles the high deductible of a Medicare plan with a medical savings account. Every year, Medicare deposits an amount of money into this plan for you to use on your health care needs, even if they aren't covered by Medicare. Additionally, if you do use this money on services covered by Medicare Parts A or B, it'll count towards your deductible. Once the deductible is reached, this plan will pay for any Medicare-covered services.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage (sometimes called Part C) is a holistic coverage that is an alternative to the original Medicare plan. Where Medicare is more of an a la carte system (selecting from Parts A, B, and D), Medicare Advantage bundles much of the coverage into one plan.

What are the differences between Medicare and Medicare Advantage?

Medicare Advantage more resembles the private insurance plans you likely had under your employer with PPO and HMO options. With Medicare, you would be able to visit any provider who accepts Medicare insurance, as opposed to staying “in-network” on the plan. Medicare Advantage also offers some coverage not available under original Medicare such as dental and vision and even gym memberships.

How does enrollment for Medicare Advantage differ from Medicare?

With Medicare, you enroll in separate elements of the plan to cover your needs. With Medicare Advantage, you enroll in a single plan that combines Parts A and B and may also cover additional services not in those original plans. You would still need to apply during your Open Enrollment period.

Are there any downsides to Medicare Advantage over Medicare?

Medicare Advantage allows for more streamlined enrollment and more comprehensive benefits, however there are some limitations that may affect your choice. For example, if you travel a lot or have multiple homes you frequent, it's important to note Medicare Advantage is often bound geographically for who is in network and, if you travel to more rural areas often, you will be less likely to find an in-network provider. That being said, neither plan will cover your health care outside the country. For that you would need separate traveler's insurance.
